About the event

Hosted by Grow Wild Retreats on Vancouver Island, BC in beautiful Shawnigan Lake, https://www.growwildretreats.com along side their Grow Wild Women's Festival August 25 - 27, 2023

This Introduction to Traditional Tanning includes interactive skinning (if available) and tanning demonstrations along with information on hide handling and hide preparation as part of this dynamic women's festival where all wild women are celebrated and united to empower one another.

Discussions covering all aspects of preservation and preparation prior to starting a traditional tanning process will be throughout the day. Come ask questions, bring some hides, connect with like minded people and gain valuable knowledge you can immediately apply yourself at home.

Wether you are wanting to make rawhide drums or sheepskin rugs, from Squirrels to Bison, expert guidance and instruction will give you the knowledge you need for success with a clear plan on creating something beautiful and valuable.

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL BRAIN / SMOKE TANNING?

Traditional tanning methods can vary but the basic steps are the same.

Traditional tanning is when animal hides are preserved using a lecithin and smoke, leaving a durable and soft leather material that is water resistant and washable. They are preserved in a non toxic way using natural materials and elements. Traditionally tanned hides are completely washable, non toxic, and essentially a carbon neutral product that you can enjoy for decades.

Types of Traditional Tanning

Hair or fur on - this is when furs and hides are tanned with the fur or hair remaining on on side and soft smooth leather on the other side. This method is used for throws, rugs and winter garments etc.

Small animals can have a different method of tanning than that of completing larger hides such as deer. This method is more often used in small to medium sized furs and hides where the fibre is soft to touch.

Rawhide - is not actually tanned at all, this method of hide preparation can be used when making drums or hard knife sheaths, lacing etc. or when needing to start and preserve a hide prior to the tanning process. Finished Rawhide can be used as a strong crafting material or then tanned into soft buckskin leather.

Buckskin Leather - Is a hairless on both sides, leather only tanning method. That requires the most intensive process but employs methods learned in the above hair on and rawhide instruction. This tanning method is usually reserved for the largest hides such as elk, moose, beef and bison or where the hair is coarse and undesirable to feel.

I have been operating Wildfibre Organic Tannery full time since 2018 where locally produced sheepskins are tanned and shipped all over North America. In addition, knowledge sharing with the Indigenous and Metis Communities along with Public K-12 schools in Alberta, has been a great pleasure this 2022 year. Visit About Me to learn more about Instructor Cheryl Reynen. Pets not permitted onsite. Registration is mandatory, proof of registration is required for entry to this event. Address and directions will be emailed out to all registrants 3 days prior to the event. Refunds are not accepted, registrations are transferable.
